Dear Homo Sapiens, There is no need to continue reading this page. What follows is intended for search engine robots and spiders and not necessarily for human beings. Further information concerning gulet sailing holidays in Greece and Turkey may be obtained by clicking on the maroon links immediately above. Thank You. This page features a selection of crewed motor-sailing gulets which may be found sailing Turkey and sailing Greece and, in one instance, sailing Croatia. Other crewed gulets may be found by clicking on the link "To List of Additional Gulets" immediately above. These gulets are mostly on yacht charter in Turkey. Gulets are also on yacht charter in Greece and Croatia. That is, gulets home-ported in Turkey may be found on charter in Greece. Turkish-built gulets may also be found on charter in Croatia. Crewed motor-sailing gulets are sailing Turkey, Greece, and Croatia at least six months each year. The term gulet is said by some to be derived from galley, as the ancient and medieval galleys which plied these waters for more than two millennia until superseded by sailing vessels such as the gulet. Galleys, too, could be found at sea at least six months each Mediterranean year. Why not charter one of the gulets listed here to cruise the crossroads of galley history, tracing a part of the web created by galley wakes from those of Greek superhero Alcibiades in the fifth century BC to those of the Barbarossa brothers in the sixteenth century AD. Some of the intervening wakes in Aegean galley history were created by a Greek-Italian victim of 13th century discrimination known as Licario of Caristos. The Aegean had been mostly Latin since the Fourth Crusade's 1204 sack of Constantinople, and Licario was born of a Latin father and a local woman at Caristos on the island of Negroponte, Negroponte being the Latin name for the large island off eastern Greece now called Euboea. Licario first appeared to history in about AD1270 by wooing and secretly wedding Felicia dalle Carceri, Baroness of Caristos. A widow ruling the southern third of the island, she was deemed by her Latin brother Giberto da Verona (baron ruling the middle third) to be of eminent station, too eminent for the likes of a Greek-Italian admixture. Banished to the Negroponte outback, Licario organized a band of have-nots and fought back, wreaking havoc on both baronies from a mountain stronghold and gathering under his aegis a number of galleys with which to harass local shipping. He proved, however, unable to either topple da Verona or redeem his wife. In 1271 he made contact with the Greek Admiral Alexus Philanthropenos and offered his services to Byzantine Emperor Michael Palaeologus. The emperor accepted. From 1272 to 1275 Licario was so successfully employed along the seaboard of Asia Minor that in 1276 he was Charter Boat Sailing Turkeypromoted to Megas Doux, or grand duke, and captain-general of the Byzantine Navy. He was also given title to Negroponte should he be able to take it. Returning that same year with a Byzantine fleet of 24 galleys he found his wife recently deceased and vented his fury by taking one island city after another. In an engagement at Vatondas near the capital city of Khalkis (depicted), Licario effectively ended opposition to his rule. Among the captured was the Latin Duke of Athens, and among the opposing dead was his former wife's intolerant brother Giberto da Verona. Next charged with clearing the Aegean of Latin corsairs, Licario made life miserable for Latins at or sailing from the Aegean islands of Skyros, Skopelos, Kea, Serifos, Sifnos, Santorini, Astipalaia, and Lemnos. Honored repeatedly at the emperor's court in Constantinople, Licario met there and married a Greek woman of considerable beauty as well as station. They departed Constantinople on one of Licario's galleys for a honeymoon in the Aegean, thereafter living happily with offspring until history lost interest. Smaller gulets with two or three guest cabins, usually called tirhandils because of their double-ended caique design, are appropriate for honeymoons. These and larger crewed gulets are also ideal platforms for family holidays and can act as mobile history and geography classrooms doing the jobs local schools frequently don't. Gulets are also ideal for group holidays as there are usually at least four guest cabins and often as many as eight or more, each cabin having an en-suite water closet. There are numerous other amenities, and all gulets have lots of deck space. Crewed gulets go cruising in Greece, Turkey, and Croatia, in Greece among Dodecanese Islands and among Aegean Cyclades, in Turkey along the Anatolian coast between Kusadasi and Antalya, in Croatia along the Dalmatian coast. Most Greek island cruises begin and end in Turkey, entering and leaving Greece through clearing ports in Rhodes, Kos, Samos, and Simi (Symi). Most Turkish coast charters begin at either Bodrum or Gocek and end at the other. Most Croatian charters begin at Dubrovnik or Split. Charter Yachts Turkey is able to customize itineraries to any group's preference. Along Alexander's Path, following Cleopatra's Route, as well as on Aegean Odysseys in the wake of Licario of Caristos. We can do the same in Croatia's Adriatic.
