Are you searching for skippered charters cruising Turkey and Greece? Or for Comet 50 charter yachts sailing the eastern Mediterranean? Could you be thinking of a skippered yacht charter in Turkey aboard a Comet 50? Of a cruise through turquoise waters along the indented coast of Asia Minor? Of exploring those indentations? Of swimming in seawater surrounded by wild flowers and Calabrian pine? Of snaring a chocolate tree pod? Of snaring your own sea bass? Or are you thinking of a yacht charter in Greece? Of a cruise among remote Aegean islands? Of sailing an azure sea in a fast sloop-rigged sailing yacht aesthetically pleasing to the eye? Of parking stern to a seaside promenade? Of snatching your own octopus from the sea? Of the taste of octopus grilled? Of the tang in a good garlic salad? Or all of the above? Might you also be thinking of a cruise through history? Of a cruise at the crossroads of corsair history? Of sailing the wakes of famous sea captains like the Barbarossa brothers and Dragut and the several Murats Reis? All of these corsair privateers sailed under letters of marque issued by the Ottoman sultan in Istanbul, their ships galliots or small galleys with 18 to 22 banks of oars, their purpose to disrupt Latin shipping in the Aegean and elsewhere, to make life for Latins ashore something of a trial, and to improve their own circumstances at the same time. Eventually most also sailed with Ottoman commissions in Ottoman naval service. The last notable Murat Reis, or Murat Captain, is said to have himself been Latin by birth, a Sardinian (some say Albanian) kidnapped in 1546 as a youngster and made the protege of his Muslim kidnapper. He gained fame and prizes by the ruse of dropping the masts of his galliots and hiding their hulls one behind the other so as not to appear threatening until too late. By 1565 he was in Ottoman service under Dragut at the siege of Malta, and in 1571 he served under Uluj Ali at the Battle of Lepanto. In 1578 he captured the Spanish viceroy of Sicily, and two years later the papal flagship fell into his hands. That year he took prizes carrying more than a million ducats in gold coin. In 1586 he became the first corsair to venture outside the Mediterranean when he sacked one of the Canary Islands. In 1599 he destroyed a ten-ship armada belonging to the Knights of Malta, including the 90-gun flagship Red Galleon. For the next quarter century he is said to have purged the Aegean of Latin shipping, clearing sea lanes from Lemnos to Crete and from Rhodes to Hydra. And he is said to have been still going strong at the age of 100. Would you like to sail in the wake of Murat Reis? Would you like to call in at his ports and back bays, enjoy the clean air and clear seawater which may have furthered his longevity? Along the coast of Turkey? Among Aegean islands of Greece? While you holiday? While you holiday with friends aboard a skippered charter yacht proceeding leisurely from one intriguing locale to another? Starting in Bodrum? Or Gocek?
